Ch 45 Microbiology Flashcards
Acid-fast stain
Special stain used to expose to tuberculosis organism
Agar
A jelly substance extracted from red algae (red seaweed) that’s used to help bacteria grow in a lab. Scientists use it to see what germs are there. It gives germs food and a nice place to grow
Buccal
A type of swab used to collect dna from the inside of the cheek or mouth.
Candidiasis
Yeast infection or thrush
Colony
A group of organisms grown from the same cell
Culture
A lab test that grows microorganisms or cells in a medium to identify infections
Medium
A substance or environment that makes a process or cause an effect easier
Culture and sensitivity (C&S) test
A lab procedure performed to determine what organisms are growing and what antibiotics kills them.
Culture media
Liquid or gel Broth containing nourishment for bacteria
Beckton Dickinson Culture Swab System
Enteritis
Intestinal inflammation (food poisoning)
Exudates
A thick drainage;pus
Facultative anaerobes
Bacteria grows with SOME oxygen
Feces
Stool
Fixed
Remains in a set position. Ex: its fixed by passing under The clear part of the slides 3-4 Times or flooding The slides with methanol and letting it dry.
Fungus
A spore producing organism that Feeds on organic matter
Inoculated
Referring to The condition of microorganisms that have been placed on or in media
Lawn technique
The preparations of a Petri dish with a pure culture specimen
Microbiology
The study of living organisms. Too small for The naked eye
Microorganisms
Tiny organisms
Methilicin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
Germ that is resistant to some antibiotics. Can spread in hospitals.
Moniliasis
Yeast infection; also called candidiasis or thrush
Morphology
Study of The shape of cells
Mycology
The study of fungi
