What are adverse effects of hormone therapy such as levothyroxine
Over medication can result in indications of. Hyperthyroidism such as; anxiety, tachycardia,palpitations, altered appetite, abdominal cramping, heat intolerance,fever, diaphoresis, wt. loss, menstrual irregularities
What are thyroid hormones
Levothyroxine ( Synthroid, levothroid)
Liothyroxine ( Cytomel)
Liotrix ( thyrolar)
Thyroid ( thyroid USP)
These drugs are used in the treatment of hypothyroidism
They are used for emergency treatment of myxedema coma (IV route)
What are contraindications and precautions of hormone therapy such as levothyroxine
Use cautiously in pregnancy and lactation
Contraindicated in ppl who have thyrotoxicosis
Because of cardiac stimulate effects, use is contraindicated following a MI
NOT FOR USE IN TREATING OBESITY
What med interactions of levothyroxine hormone drugs
Binding agents such as ( cholestyramine, antacids, iron and calcium supplements) & sucralfate ( Carafate) may reduce levothyroxine absorption with concurrent use./allow at least 3 hr between med administration.
Anti seizure meds may increase levothyroxine metabolism
Levothyroxine can increase the therapeutic effects of warfarin by breaking down vit k.
What are important nursing administrations when administering hormone therapy
Monitor T4 and TSH levels
Monitor and report signs of cardiac excitability such as angina, chest pain, palpitations and dysrhythmias
What are clinical manifestations of hypothyroidism
Depression Wt gain Bradycardia Anorexia Cold intolerance Dry skin Mennorhagia
