CH. 4 - Tissues Flashcards
1
Q
Cells
A
Work together in functionally related groups called
tissues
2
Q
Tissue
A
A group of cells of similar structure that perform a
common function
3
Q
Four Basic Tissue Types and their functions
A
- Epithelial tissue — covering
- Connective tissue — support
- Muscle tissue — movement
- Nervous tissue — control
4
Q
Epithelial Tissue
A
- Covers a body surface or lines a body cavity, forms parts of most glands
- Functions of epithelia- Protection, secretion, absorption, diffusion, filtration,
sensory reception - Special Characteristics-
– Cellularity- Cells separated by minimal extracellular material, joined by
special junctions
– Polarity- Cell regions of the apical surface differ from the basal surface
▪ apical: exposed
▪ basal: attached to basement membrane
– Supported by connective tissue
– Avascular but innervated- Epithelial cells receive nutrients from
underlying connective tissue
– Regeneration- Highly mitotic
