CH. 1 Planes & Sections / Cavities & Membranes / Abdominal Quadrants Flashcards
Planes
- Sagittal
- Frontal / Coronal
- Transverse (horizontal)
- Oblique
Sagittal Plane
– Median (Midsagittal): Separates into left and right sides
– Parasagittal: offset parallel section to the midline
Frontal / Coronal Plane
Separates into anterior and posterior
sections
Transverse Plane
(Horizontal)
Separates into superior and inferior
sections
Oblique
Passes through at an angle between transverse plane and either sagittal or frontal plane
Body Cavities
Dorsal body cavity
– Cranial cavity
– Vertebral cavity
Ventral body cavity
– Thoracic cavity: divided into three parts
▪ Two lateral parts, each containing a lung surrounded by a pleural cavity
▪ Mediastinum: contains the heart surrounded by the pericardial cavity
Ventral body cavity
– Abdominopelvic cavity: divided into two parts
▪ Abdominal cavity: contains the liver, stomach, kidneys, and other organs
▪ Pelvic cavity: contains the bladder, some reproductive organs, and rectum
Dorsal Body Cavity
– Cranial cavity
– Vertebral cavity
Ventral Body Cavity
- Thoracic cavity
- Abdominopelvic cavity: divided into two parts
▪ Abdominal cavity
▪ Pelvic cavity
Cranial Cavity
Contains brain
Vertebral Cavity
Contains spinal cord
Thoracic Cavity
Contains the heart and lungs
Divided into three parts
▪ Two lateral parts, each containing a lung surrounded by a pleural cavity
▪ Mediastinum—contains the heart surrounded by the pericardial cavity
Abdominal cavity
Contains digestive viscera; liver, stomach, kidneys, and other organs
Pelvic Cavity
Contains the bladder, some reproductive organs, and rectum
Serous Membranes
- Serous cavities: a slitlike space lined by a serous membrane
- Pleural cavities (for each lung)
- Pericardial cavity - cavity for heart
- Peritoneal cavity
- Mediastinum-
- Serous fluid
Serous Cavities
A slitlike space lined by a serous membrane
– Visceral- lining organ – Parietal- lining cavity
