Ch. 4 Tissue Level of Organization Flashcards
types of connective tissue
connective tissue proper, fluid connective tissue, supporting connective tissue
macrophages
engulf or phagocytize, damaged cells or pathogens that enter the tissue; also release chemicals that mobilize immune system chemicals and other macrophages
connective tissue proper
connective tissues that contain varied cell populations and fiber types surrounded by a syrupy ground substance
Ex: loose (fibers), dense (packed fibers)
fluid connective tissue
distinctive population of cells suspended in a matrix of watery ground substance that contains proteins
Ex: blood, lymph
hyaline cartilage
most common one; contains closely-packed collagen fibers making it tough yet flexible; connects ribs to sternum, supports respiratory tract
fibroblasts
most common in connective tissue proper; produces and maintains the connective tissues fibers and ground substance
fibrocartilage
densely interwoven making them durable and tough and has little ground substance; lie between vertebrae of spinal column
muscle types
skeletal, cardiac, smooth
skeletal muscle
large multinucleated cells; form muscle fibers; marked by striations; striated voluntary muscle
cardiac muscle
heart muscle; short branched and straited; usually with single nucleus; cells connected by intercalated discs
smooth muscle
short spindle shaped and nonstriated with single central nucleus
found in blood vessels, digestive, respiratory, and urinary tracts
