Factors that influence perception

With bombardment of info we tend to deal with selective screening which allows only portion of available info enter our perceptions

Order to organize we use schemes which are cognitive frameworks that represent organized knowledge developed through experience about people, objects or events
Script schemas
Knowledge framework describes the appropriate sequence of events given situation
Self schemas
Contains info about persons own appearance, behavior and personality
Person schemas
Way individual sort others into categories such as types or groups in terms of similar perceived features
Person-in-situation schemas
Combine schemas built around persons and events
Halo effect
Uses 1 attribute to develop overall impression of person or situation
Selective perception
Tendency to define problems from ones own point of view
Projection
Assigns personal attributes to each other individuals
Contrast effect
Occurs when meaning something takes place is based on contrast with another recent event or situation
Self fulfilling prophecy
Creating or finding in situation that which u expected to find the 1st place
Attribution
Process of creating explanations for events
Fundamental attribution errors
Overestimates internal factors and underestimates external factors as influences on someone’s behavior
Self-serving bias
Underestimates internal factors and overestimates external factors as influences in someone’s behavior
