3 primary layers of skin
Epidermis: outer layer. normal flora, protects against water loss and microorganism entry
Dermis: Collagen and fibers, nerve fibers, glands, follicles
Subcutaneous: Blood vessels, nerve, lympth, connective tissue, fat cells
Peripheral neuropathy
muscle wasting; no tendon reflexes, foot deform, infection, abnormal gait, no vibratory sensation
Vascular insufficiency
decreased hair growth on legs, decreased pulses, foot infection, poor wound heal, thick nails, shiny appearance, blanch skin on elevation
Fowlers position
45 semi-sit: eating tube insert, promote lung expansion, eases difficult breathing
Semi fowlers
30: ventilator, promote lung expansion, gastric feedings
trendelenburgs
Bed angled with head down, feet up: postural drainage, facilitate venous return.
Reverse trendelenburg
Bed angled with head up, feet down; esophageal reflux
Flat
Parallel to floor: vetebral injury, hypotensive, sleep
Sims
Left side semiprone; flexion of hip and knee: rectum and vagina procedures
Lithotomy
stirrups; gyn exam
dorsal recumbent
knees up; perineal care
Lateral Recumbent (sims)
Lying on side weight on hip and shoulder; aids in detecting murmurs.
