Strabismus
lazy eye
from muscle imbalance or paralysis of extraocular muscles, may be a congenital defect
should not be present after 4 mo
surgery before age 2 yr if nonsurgical interventions fail
conjunctivitis
pink eye
inflammation of conjunctiva
caused by allergy, infection, or trauma
child should not go to school until abx have been admined for 24 hrs
chlamydial conjunctivitis
rare in older children; if dx in a child who is not sexually active, the child should be assessed for possible sexual abuse
otitis media
inflammatory disorder usually caused by an infection of the middle ear as a result of a blocked eustachian tube
Myringotomy
surgical incision into the tympanic membrane to provide drainage of the purulent middle ear fluid
tympanoplasty tubes may be inserted into the middle ear to allow cont. drainage
adenoiditis
inflammation and infection of the adenoids (pharyngeal tonsils)
tonsillectomy post op
position the child prone or side lying to facilitate drainage
avoid red, purple, or brown liquids, which simulate the appearance of blood if the child vomits
avoid milk products initially bc they coat the throat
soft foods may be rx 1 - 2 dys post op
usually able to resume normal activities 1 - 2 weeks post op
Priority Nursing Actions NOSEBLEED
- remain calm, keep child calm and quiet
- have the child sit up and lean forward (not lying down)
- apply continuous pressure to the nose with the thumb and forefinger for at least 10 min
- insert cotton or wadded tissue into each nostril, and apply ice or a cold cloth to the bridge of the nose if bleeding persists
