Phonemic Awareness
- relates to the understanding of the individual sounds that come together to create words
- the ability to hear, segment, blend, and manipulate sounds in oral language
Phonics
relates to the association between phonemes and the letters that represent them

relates to the automaticity (the fast, effortless word recognition that comes with a great deal of reading practice) of reading
Comprehension
ultimate goal of reading / improved when students bring prior knowledge to reading experience / understanding sentence structure and context clues
Expository Instruction
the use of an expert to explain a concept or give information to the student
