Nouns
- people, places, things, or ideas [most fundamental part of speech in english language]
- answer the question: “what” or “who” in a sentence
- also serve as Subject in sentence
Pronouns
- words that take the place of nouns
- help us avoid having to repeat persons name
- I / me / he / him/ she / her / it / they / we / our / ours
Verbs
- the actions in a sentence
- {ex: fly / laugh / believe / run / think / soar / forgive / compete / magnify}
- In order to have a complete sentence there needs to be: Subject + Verb
Adverbs
- modify, or give us more information about verbs
- how / when / where / why
- used as single words or as whole phrases
Adjectives
- words that describe nouns
- explain size / number / color / quantity
- writing would be boring without it
- add color to our sentences
Prepositions
- important for connecting words and phrases together in sentences
- after / against / among / above / around / beneath
Conjunctions
- join words, phrases, and sentences together
- and / but / or / so / for / nor / yet
Interjection
an exclamation / strong emotion / interrupts flow of sentence
Colon
way of letting the reader know there’s more to come to further illustrate a thought after the main clause
Semicolon
used to connect two independent clauses that are closely related to each other, to connect transitional words and phrases within a sentence, and to keep items in a list that have internal punctuation separate
Independent Clause
a clause with at least one subject and one verb that can stand on its own as a sentence
Dependent Clause
The clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand on its own as a sentence
Modifier
- is a word, phrase, or clause that modifies [or describes] another word
- ex: “the tin man” / “the cowardly lion”
Clear sentence checklist
- Do all the words in the sentence serve a purpose?
- Is the sentence in a passive voice?
- Are all of your commas, colons, and semicolons in the right place?
- Is anything misspelled?
- Do your subjects and verbs all agree with each other?
Passive Voice
the subject is a recipient of a verb’s actions (ex: The house will be cleaned by me every Saturday)
