Transcendentalists
believe that society and its institutions—particularly organized religion and political parties—corrupt the purity of the individual
Transcendentalisms’ Impact
Ralph Waldo Emerson was at the center of this movement / radical thinkers among Puritanical values/ believed that every person had a relationship between themselves and the universe / a modern, fluid, and personal sense of spirituality / critical of conformity: nonconformists, rejected practices in organized religion / organized religion had authority over one’s personal choices and they didn’t like that / valued simplicity, self-reliance, openness, beauty of the world, imagination
