Ch 33. The canine and feline lung. Flashcards
What are the lung lobes of the dog and cat?
Four right lobes : Right cranial, middle, caudal and accessory.
Two left lobes: Left cranial (cranial/caudal segments) and left caudal.
What is the name of the approach where you associate a pulmonary pattern with a list of possibilities?
The Gamut approach
(Gimme). Three things that make up an alveolar pattern?
Air bronchogram, lobar sign, border effacement of the cardiac sillhoutte.
What are causes of an alveolar pattern?
Pneumonia, cardiogenic edema, noncardiogenic edema, hemorrhage, PTE, atelectasis, allergy(eosinophilic), primary lung tumor.
What are causes for a bronchial pattern?
Allergic airway disease, infection, chronic inflammation, cardiogenic pulmonary edema, diffuse tumor.
What are possible consequences of chronic bronchial disease?
Lobar collapse, bronchiectasis, spontaneous rib fractures, pulmonary hyperinflation and bronchial mineralization.
Lobar collapse is often seen in cats with what condition? which is the most commonly associated lung lobe?
Lobar collapse is most often associated with cats with asthma. The right middle lung lobe is most affected.
Cats that have spontaneous rib fractures are mostly due to respiratory disease? What other 2 diseases have been known to play a role?
Chronic renal disease or neoplasia (myeloma)
What disease can cause bronchial mineralization diffusely but not affect thickness of the bronchial wall?
Hyperadrenocorticisim
What diameter in mm has been suggested for a nodule to be detected radiographically?
7-9 mm
A nodule is considered a mass when the lesion becomes what size?
2.0 cm
Mineralized pulmonary nodules that are normal are also called what?
Pulmonary osseous metaplasia or heterotopic bone
What radiographic pattern can be seen in cats with HCM and RCM and in dogs with DCM to suggest cariogenic pulmonary edema?
A bronchial pattern.
In large dogs what is the most common lobe associated with a lung lobe torsion?
Right middle lung lobe
In small dogs what is the most common lobe associated with a lung lobe torsion?
Left cranial lung lobe
