Coping
how an individual deals with problems illness or stress
Stress is
a change in an individual state of balance in response to a stressor
coping
describes how an individual deals with problems and issue. behavioral and cognitive efforts
Adaption
coping behavior that describes how an individual handles demands impose by the enviornment
GAS general adaption syndrome “stress syndrome”
three stages
- alarm stage
- Resistance stage
- exhaustion stage
alarm stage
- body heightened to respond to stress
- fight or flight
- epinephrine, norepinephrine cortisone are released = high BP HR
- heightened mental alertness
Resistance stage
body function normalize while responding to stressor.
- body copes w/ stressor = homeostasis
- = stabilized BP HR hormones
Exhaustion stage
body no longer able to maintain response to stressor & patient cannot adapt
-end stage = recovery/death
adherence
Role conflict
when a person must assume opposing role with incompatible expectation
sick role
expectation of others and society regarding how one should behave when sick
role ambiguity
uncertainty about what is expected when assuming a role. creates confusion
role strain
frustration and anxiety that occurs when a person feels inadequate for a role. (caring for a parent with dementia)
role overload
more responsibility and roles than are manageable (student, employee, parent)
temporary role change
client resumes the role when illness resolves
