ch 33 adrenal drugs Flashcards
Over secretion of adrenocortical hormones leads to?
Cushing’s syndrome
-purple striae
-moon face
-na fluid retention
-hyperglycemia
Undersecretion
Addison’s disease
-weight loss
-postural hypotension
-hypoglcemia
-bronze skin tone
Glucocorticoids
regulates metabolism of carbs (can increase blood glucose)
- suppresses immune responses/ supports adaptation during times of stress/ Topical/ inhalant/ PO/ Parenteral
Contraindicated in infections– immunosuppressive agent
Betamethasone
fetal maturation of lungs
Methylprednisolone
most common injection
-cannot be used in children less than 28 days b/c benzyl alcohol preservative
Prednisone
most common PO, anti inflammatory and immunosuppressive purposes, exacerbation in respiratory conditions like COPD and asthma
Mineralocorticoids
regulate mineral salts (fluids and electrolytes)
Aldosterone
maintains normal levels of sodium in the blood/ Na+ reabsorption from the urine back into the blood
Fludrocortisone
used for addison’s disease and adrenocortical insufficiency, increases retention of Na+ and water and loss of potassium/ contraindicated in systemic fungal infections/ adverse effects-edema, hypertension, weight gain (2lbs or more a day/ 5lbs or more a week), hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, compression bone fractures, increase ulcer risk
