ch 3 streptococci a Flashcards
Streptococcus pneumoniae is
the leading cause of pneumonia. It is a normal inhabitant of the human upper respiratory tract
Viridans Streptococci are
normal flora in the mouth and the upper respiratory tract
Streptococcus Viridans gram stain
Gram positive, cocci, short chain
Streptococci pneumoniae (Pneumococci) gram stain
Gram positive, diplococci
Streptococci pneumoniae media and colony
Blood agar
α-hemolysis
Viridans Streptococci media and colony
Blood agar
α-hemolysis
Susceptibility to optochin disc
Streptococcus Viridans Streptococci (R)
pneumoniae (Pneumococci) (S)
Bile solubility test
Streptococcus Viridans Streptococci : Insoluble in bile
pneumoniae (Pneumococci) : Soluble in bile
Capsule
Streptococcus Viridans Streptococci : No capsule (except Streptococcus mutans)
pneumoniae (Pneumococci) : Has capsule
Inulin fermentation test
Streptococcus Viridans Streptococci : Negative (don’t ferment inulin)
pneumoniae (Pneumococci) : Positive (ferment inulin)
This test is useful to differentiate Pneumococci from Streptococci as the latter do not ferment Inulin sugar while Pneumococci do ferment it.
Inulin Test
Virulence Factors of S. pneumoniae:

• Pili
Pneumolysin
Diseases caused by S. pneumoniae:

Diseases caused by Viridans Streptococci:
Dental infections, including dental caries, abscesses • Subacute endocarditis
