ch 3 part 2 Flashcards
what is the limbic system surrounded by?
the hypothalamus.
what is the limbic system responsible for?
emotional behavior during stress time.
what is cerebral cortex responsible for?
visual auditory and somatosensory.
how does cerebral cortex dysfunction
due to drug abuse and alcohol.
what is the role of the neurons?
receive and transmits information.
what does neurons de?
enable communication.
what is the principle of neurons
cell body dendrites and axon.
how doe the system of neurotransmitters work?
neurotransmitters receptors and receptor binding.
how does change in neuron occur?
by excitation and inhabitation.
what are the 3 Basic stages of neuronal communication.
Neurotransmitter release
- Receptor binding
- Returning back or “reuptake”
what are the 3 WAYS DRUGS CAN INFLUENCE
BRAIN FUNCTIONING?
Increasing the quantity of neurotransmitters released into the
synapse from the synaptic knob.
2. Diminishing the likelihood of receptor binding.
3. Neurons return back to the origin point (i.e., synaptic knob)
how does The speed of reuptake can be modified?
by a specific drug.
•What happens if reuptake is slowed ?
Neurotransmitter stays in the receptor longer and the binding is enhanced.
This means that the effect is prolonged
What happens if reuptake is quickened ?
Neurotransmitter stays in the receptor for a shorter amount of time and the binding is diminished.
This means that the effect is reduced
where is muscarine receptor located?
- Located in the Autonomic Nervous System (in the PNS)
