ch#3 living things Flashcards
what are they characteristics of living things?
the 7 are: (MRS GREN)
1-movement-animals move from place to place. plants move by extending their stems and roots.
2-Respiration- All living things need to use the chemical respiration to survive.
3-Sensitivity- They sense things in there surrounding. EG-light.
4-Growth- they increase size in their lifetime.
5-Reproduction-living things produce offspring
6-Excretion-they remove waste products.
7-Nutrition- plants make their own nutrients form water and carbon dioxide. animals eat other animals
what are the 3 types of microscope and how do they difffer?
1- Light microscope
these can be found in schools, and can Magnify objects by 1000x. but they need to be thin so light can pass through them.
2-Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
They are found in universities and labs. They can Magnify up to 1,000,000x . They show the surface of an object.
3-Transition Electron microscopes (TEM)
They are found in universities and labs. They can Magnify up to 1,000,000x . They look at thin slices like light microscopes do.
Electron microscopes show black and white images but can be coloured artificially to make them clearer.
what are the different types of microrganisms?
1- Hyphae- Microscopic tangle of thin threads called hyphae. They absorb nutrients from their surrounding.
2- Bacteria- Bacteria are the smallest type of microorganism. They are present wherever there are nutrients and water. They reproduce asexually
What are some harmful micro-organisms and how do they harm your body?
1- Ringworms
Things mean fungus grows in your skin. It feeds on his hair and leaves bald patches on your head.
2- Athletes foot
It grows in the moist skin between your toes.
3-Typhoid
symtoms:
Headache
watery Faeces
You can catch typhoid when harmful bacteria enter your food. they reproduce in your digestive system and and make you ill.
What deseases are caused by Protozoa?
1-Malaria
When a mosquito bites you,it can give you malaria.its saliva contains protozoan. It will reproduce in your body and will release chemicals that will give you chills, a fever and muscle pain.
Mosquitoes are vectors, this means it carries protozoan from one victim to another.
2-Sleeping sickness
Tsetse flies also carry protozoan. They cause a fatal diease called sleeping sickness.
3-leishmaniasis
Sand flies carry leishmaniases which produces painful sores on the victims skin.
Discuss Hepatitis C
If you get infected with this disease, It will start damaging your liver, but it could be years before you find out.
This deseaan only be passed from blood. EG-Contaminated needles or tattoo machines.
Discuss animal cells.
There are 3 main parts of an animal cell.
1-Nucleus
The nucleus’s titres a set of instructions called genes, which control what happens in the cell
2-Cytoplasm
Most chemical reactions that occur in the plant happen in the cytoplasm
3-Cell membrane
The cell membrane controls what enters and leaves the cell. it lets nutrients and oxygen in and waste products out
Discuss plant cells
In most plants there are chloroplasts. They capture light energy, which are used to m ale food.
The food I add stored in cell sap, which fills a large b ash called a vacuole.
Discuss Red blood cells (RBC)
Red blood cells have known nucleus and they are small and flexible. They packed full of haemoglobin a red chemical that carries oxygen the specialist to squeeze through narrow blood vessels to deliver oxygen to every other cell.
