Ch. 3 Flashcards
Are all minerals brittle?
No some are tho
Is limestone radioactive?
No and most minerals aren’t
What are most minerals?
Silicate
What’s the ability of a mineral to glow and change under a ultra violet light?
Fluorescence
What’s the way that that a minerals surface reflects the light?
Luster
What is ductility?
The substances ability to be drawn or pulled into a wire
What’s cleavage?
A minerals tendency to split against parallel and flat surfaces
Fracture?
Minerals tendency break irregular
What’s streak?
The color of powder left by a mineral when it’s rubbed against a hard rough surface.
4 questions scientists ask to identify if the substance is a mineral or not?
- is the substance naturally occurring
- is the substance inorganic
- is the substance a crystalline solid
- does it have a definite Chemical composition
Difference between a rock and a mineral?
a mineral is a rock but a rock isn’t a mineral Bc rocks are mad up of many different minerals where as a mineral has a definite chemical composition
Why are some minerals metals but others aren’t?
Some are alloys which are combinations of metals. Alloys can’t be minerals Bc they don’t have a definite chemical composition
How are ores strand formed into metals?
By separating with magnets, electricity, or by heating to high temperatures in the presence of carbon or carbon monoxide
How is hardness determined using the field scale?
You do experiments included in the field hardness scale and then compare those findings to MOHs hardness scale
Are metals valuable?
Yes Bc they are good conductors of heat and electricity, but answer=all of the above
