Ch 3 Flashcards
Natural selection is the only evolutionary process. True or false?
False
Is pregnancy sickness a good thing or bad thing?
It is actually a good thing because it is an adaption that the mother takes on to protect her fetus from toxins in her body
An allele is only an allele as long as?
There are alternatives in the population at a particular locus on the chromosome
What is the modern definition of evolution?
Change in gene frequency across generations
What is synaptic pruning?
The developmental process by which synapses are eliminated
What is synaptogenesis?
The ability for new runs to grow synapses
What is a neuron?
A nerve cell
What’s does the placentas development rely upon? The genome of the fetus or the mother? What can be controlled through the placenta?
The placenta is part of the fetuses genome. It acts as a parasite that’s taps into the mothers bloodstream and can control the mothers blood pressure and blood sugar
What is noise?
Things that aren’t nature or nurture but are part of development
What is meiosis?
The process by which eggs and sperm are produced
What is a zygote?
A fertilized egg
What is a Pleiotropy?
The phenomenon of a single gene having effects on more than one trait.
For example a gene which causes light skin also causing a certain type of cognitive function
What is a byproduct?
The trait that has come out as a result of natural selection although it is not itself selected for.
for example the bellybutton
What is a bottle neck question
A situation in which the population is drastically reduced for one generation such that genetic diversity is lost
for example the leaving of Africa
What is the founders effect?
A special case of genetic drift where a small population begins a new nation and recessive alleles can go hidden easily but remain carried for generations
