What are the basic religious tenets of the religion Islam?

Who is the leader of the local congregation?
Imam
Are there any restrictions about the removal of remains?
No
At or before the removal, the family must see that the remains:
Eyes must be closed
Body completely covered
Family may recite prayer until the remains exit the house
Is embalming allowed?
No it’s expressly forbidden
What’s the Al-Ghusl?
Ceremonial Washing
What is important to know about the ceremonial washing?
Odd number of times (at least 3)
Segregated by gender (if deceased is a child, gender can be mixed)
Family may witness or participate
What should the FD provide for the Al-Ghusl?
Private area
Unused soap
Linens (towels, sheets)
Lotus leaves
Other
What is the traditional way of casketing?
No actual casket, human remains put in the hole which goes down and to the left
When casketing, what’s important to remember
No images or symbols
Any material, but wood is preferable
What is the kafan?
The traditional, white cloth for burial that leaves only face and hands exposed; non synthetic, non silky material
Why do men only have 3 pieces and women have 5 for women, in dressing?
Men only have the shroud while women also have a veil included
Is a viewing required?
It’s optional, depends on custom or preference
When would the viewing be done?
Before or after ceremonial washing
NOT to be done after shrouding
NOT to be done if remains in casket
Historically, done within 24 hours
What is the Jinazah?
A funeral prayer
When is the jinazah recited?
Right before graveside
Is cremation allowed?
No it’s forbidden
What is the placement of the body?
on right side facing east
What is important to know about burial?
Immediately following Jinazah
Body carried to grave, not rolled (shoulder carried)
Preferably in a Muslim cemetery
What is important to know about the grave?
When filled, mound one foot
May be marked with stone(s)
Hand filling required (3 handfuls while saying prayer)
Why is the grave mounded?
So no one accidently walks over their loved one
