Ch 29 Transcription and Regulation of Gene Expression Flashcards
What dictate the gene products are needed at the moment? (2)
metabolic condition and growth status
What are the 3 major classes of RNA?
tmr
What direction does RNA polymerase move?
3’ to 5’
In what direction does RNA chain grow?
5’ to 3’
What make the polymerase reaction thermodynamically favorable?
hydrolysis of PPi to inorganic phosphate
What is holoenzyme?
apoenzyme = enzyme’s catalytically inactive protein component
holoenzyme = enzyme’s catalytically active form, which includes apoenzyme and cofactor
What does the sigma subunit of RNA polymerase do?
recognize promoter (specific DNA sequence)
Can transcription occur without sigma subunit?
yeah… it just that core polymerase (alpha2-beta-beta’) cannot start the process at specific sites
