Ch 29 - Southern Italy Flashcards

1
Q

What is the climate in Southern Italy and what natural factors moderate the area?

A

Climate is hot and dry inland, becoming humid near the coast. Many vineyards are located on slopes within the Apennines, altitude provides some relief from the heat. Sea breezes cool the vineyards located on the flatter terrain of the Puglian peninsula.

Q

What are the practices for vineyard management in Southern Italy?

A

Traditionally, vines were bush-trained low to the ground with leaf cover protecting the grapes from sunburn. Cordon training and trellising are the most common methods now. These also allow for mechanisation on the flat plain of Puglia.

Q

What is the main appellation in Sicily and what wines are produced here and how are they made?

A

Etna DOC - old low-yielding vines at high altitude. Reds are noteworthy from local grapes (Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio) blended together to create fragrant wines with high acid and tannins, sour red cherries, cranberries, raspberries and dried herbs. Bottle age softens tannins and develops mushroom aromas. High quality whites made too - medium bodied with high acidity and citrus fruit with stony/steely character, honey and wax.
