Ch 26 - Intro to Italy Flashcards
What are the Italian Geographical Indications?
PDO = Denominazione di Origine Protetta (DOP)
DOC = Denominazione di Origine Controllata - subject to geographical boundaries as well as limitations on grape varieties and production methods
DOCG - Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) - in addition to all DOC requirements these wines must be bottled in the area of production and are subject to a Ministry of Agriculture tasting.
PGI = indicazione geografica protetta IGP, but also use Indicazione Geografica Tipica IGT.
What other labelling terms may be found on Italian bottles?
Classico - given the boundaries of many appellations have expanded, this term acknowledges wines that have been made solely from the original classified land and includes many of the best from the area
Riserva - acknowledges wines with higher alcohol levels and longer ageing than the minimums stipulated by the appellation laws.
