Ch 25- Respiratory System Flashcards
Upper Respiratory Tract
This area includes:
Nose, Pharynx, Larynx, Trachea, Mian Bronchi, Lobar bronchi
Nose
(Upper Respiratory Tract)
Lined with an epithelial barrier composed of pseudo stratified ciliated columnar epithelium
Consists of:
Nostril - External Nares
Nasal Cavity
Nasal Septum
Nasal Septum
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Nose)
Splits sagittally the nasal cavity into right and left cavities
Composed of:
Perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone
Vomer bone
Nasal Cartilage
Hard Palate
(Upper Respiratory Tract)- Nose
Floor of the nose composed of maxillary and palatine bone
Soft palate
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Nose)
Soft tissue posterior to the hard palate
Internal Nares
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Nose)
Connect between between nasal cavity and nasopharynx
Nasal Conchae
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Nose)
Projections from ethmoid and maxillary bones around around the nasal cavity, superior, middle, and inferior nasal meatus.
Pharynx
(Upper Respiratory Tract)
Consists of the Auditory tube, Nasopharynx, Oropharynx, Laryngopharynx
Auditory Tube
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Pharynx)
Eustachian Tube
Connects nasopharynx to middle ear
Nasopharynx
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Pharynx)
#1 Behind internal nares
Oropharynx
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Pharynx)
#2 Behind Tongue
Laryngopharynx
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Pharynx)
#3 Behind Larynx
Larynx
(Upper Respiratory Tract)
Consists of Glottis, Epiglottis, Thyroid cartilage, Cricoid Cartilage, Ventricular and Vocal folds
Glottis
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Larynx)
opening of the larynx
Epiglottis
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Larynx)
Surrounds the glottis posteriorly, composed largely of epiglottis cartilage (elastic cartilage)
Thyroid cartilage
(Upper Respiratory Tract - larynx)
Major anterior structure of the larynx
Cricoid Catilage
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Larynx)
Major posterior structure of the larynx
Ventricular Folds
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Larynx)
Vestibular Folds
Narrowing of the glottis superior to the vocal cords
Vocal Folds
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Larynx)
Vocal cords
Fibrous connective tissue “Strings” medial and inferior to the ventricular folds
Trachea
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Trachea)
Lined with epithelial barrier composed of psuedostratified ciliated columnar epithelium
Tracheal Cartilage
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Trachea)
Structural corrugations of the trachea
Main Bronchi
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Bronchi)
Primary Bronchi
Lined with an epithelial barrier composed of psuedostratified ciliated columnar epithelium
Right main bronchus
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Bronchi)
Right branch of the trachea
Left Main Bronchus
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Bronchi)
Left branch of the trachea
Lobar Bronchi
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Bronchi)
Secondary Bronchi
Lined with an epithelial barrier composed of psuedostratified ciliated columnar epithelium
Right Lobar Bronchi
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Bronchi)
3-4 branches of right main bronchus
Left Lobar Bronchi
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Bronchi)
2 branches of left main bronchus
Histology of Trachea
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Histology of trachea)
Consists of Mucosa and submucosa
Mucosa
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Histology of trachea)
Epithelium and connective tissue
psuedostratified ciliated columnar epithelium and Lamina propria (fibrous connective tissue of mucosa)
Submucosa
(Upper Respiratory Tract - Histology of trachea)
Connective tissue with mucosa glands and blood vessels
Tracheal cartilage (Hyaline cartilage) and trachealis muscle (between open ends of tracheal cartilage)
Lower Respiratory Tract
(Lower Respiratory Tract)
Consists of Lungs, lobes, pleural cavity, pulmonary circulation, segmental, respiratory and terminal bronchi, alveolar ducts, sacs, and alveoli
