Ch 23 - Vessels and Circulation Flashcards
Blood Vessels
Arteries
Carry blood from the heart and toward capillaries
Prominent layer of smooth muscle that is under control of the autonomic nervous system and various hormones
Types of Arteries
(3 TYPES)
* Elastic - Largest conducting artery away from heart, strong; aorta, pulmonary, subclaviar, Branchiocephalic, common carotid, common illiac arteries
* Muscular - Medium distributing artery, blood to body organ/tissue
* Arterioles
Arterioles
small arteries that connect to the capillaries
Capillaries
Serve as the site for transfer between blood and interstitial space
has layer of Endothelium (simple squamous epithelium)
Veins
Flaccid
Carry blood away from capillaries and to the heart
has extension of the the endothelium that serve as valves
Venules
small veins that connect to the capillaries
Lumen
open space inside of vessel
Arteries and veins
Tunica Interna
(Arteries and vein layer)
Deep layer
Endothelium (Endothelial lining) -Simple Squamous epithelium
Internal Elastic Lamina
(Arteries and vein layer)
Intina
2nd deepest layer
Elastic connective tissue prominent in arteries
Tunica Media
(Arteries and vein layer)
Middle layer
concentric sheets of smooth muscle
External Elastic Lamina
(Arteries and vein layer)
After middle layer
Elastic connective tissue, prominent in veins
Tunica External
(Arteries and vein layer)
Adventitia
Superficial Layer
Connective tissue sheath
Smooth Muscle
