Arteries

A

Carry blood from the heart and toward capillaries
Prominent layer of smooth muscle that is under control of the autonomic nervous system and various hormones

Q

Types of Arteries

A

(3 TYPES)
* Elastic - Largest conducting artery away from heart, strong; aorta, pulmonary, subclaviar, Branchiocephalic, common carotid, common illiac arteries
* Muscular - Medium distributing artery, blood to body organ/tissue
* Arterioles

Q

Capillaries

A

Serve as the site for transfer between blood and interstitial space
has layer of Endothelium (simple squamous epithelium)

Q

Veins

A

Flaccid
Carry blood away from capillaries and to the heart
has extension of the the endothelium that serve as valves

16
Q

Smooth Muscle Cells

A

(Muscle Cell)
Short Spindle shaped cells with single nuclei

17
Q

Endomysium

A

(smooth muscle)
Fibrous connective tissue connecting smooth muscle cells together side by side and end to end

18
Q

Microcirculation

A

Fluid moves between blood (vascular space) /Interstitial space –> Interstitial space/ cells (intracellular space)

19
Q

Vascular Space

A

space in the lumen of blood vessels that contains the blood

20
Q

Interstitial space

A

space between cells and the space between cells and capillaries containing interstitial fluid (integral part of fibrous connective tissues

21
Q

Extracellular Space

A

Vascular space plus interstitial space (space outside of the cell)

22
Q

Intracellular Space

A

Space inside of cells that contains the cytoplasm

23
Q

Blood capillaries

A

Thin walled vessels between the smallest arteries and veins where exchange of oxygen, nutrients, wastes, and other substances occurs between the blood and the interstitial fluid

24
Q

Lymphatic Capillaries

A

Recovers plasma lost from the blood capillaries for return to the systemic venous circulation
