Ch. 24 wk. 5 Flashcards

1
Q

Extinction

A
  • a behavior change strategy
  • happens when reinforcement (of a previously reinforced behavior) is discontinued
  • the response-reinforcer relation is ended by changing the environment so that the behavior no longer produces reinforcement
  • does not prevent the target behavior from occurring

Q

Extinction Burst

A
  • the positive, negative, or automatic reinforcement are removed, creating an immediate…

…increase in the rate of the response

Q

Escape Extinction

A
  • When behaviors do not produce a removal of the aversive stimulus, (a person cannot escape from aversive situations), behaviors are then maintained by negative reinforcement. These behaviors are then placed on extinction
  • A problem behavior aimed to escape an situation is not met with escape; escape is not allowed until the target behavior is achieved

Q

Spontaneous Recovery

A
  • a behavior comes back after it had diminished or stopped entirely
  • The behavior went away during the extinction process recurs, even though the behavior does not produce reinforcement
  • Short-lived and limited in the extinction procedure remains in effect

Q

Extinction-Induced Variability

A
  • diverse and novel forms of behaviors are sometimes observed during the extinction process

Q

Resistance to Extinction

A
  • continued responding during an extinction procedure

Three measures of resistance to extinction:

  1. Declining rate of response
  2. Total count of responses emitted before responding ceases or attains some final low level
  3. Duration of time required for the behavior to reach a predetermined criterion
