Ch 22 Respiratory Tract Infections Neoplasms Ans Childhood Disorders Flashcards
Pleurisy
Aka pleuritis an inflammation of the pleura the lining of the pleural cavity surrounding the lungs the infected lung thickens and the pleura rubs against the thorax and causes pain with breathing
Sharp stabbing pain that gets worse with deep breathing
How are “cold viruses” spread
Typically viruses of upper respiratory system spread by touching of infected person bodily fluid spread from person to person
Differences bet viral and bacterial pneumonia
Bacterial causes fluid in the lungs cause heparizatiin of lungs bacteria inflammation + blood cells in alveolar wall fluid filled pus fills air space
Viral lumen is more open dilated capillaries with interstitial edema
Common causes of bacterial pneumonia
Are less common but more serious
Caused by streptococcus pneumoniae pneumocystis jiroveci staphylococcus aureus
Critically + chronically ill pt more receptive to binding microorganisms
Smoking, antibiotic therapy that alters normal bacteria flora
Chronic bronchitis
Pneumonia impact flow of gases
Pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs structure alveoli + bronchioles
Fluid in the lungs
This causes air to fight its way in through inflamed lung structures this lead to poor gas exchange
