Ch. 22 Post fire analysis Flashcards
2 things are the most important size up duties of the first chief and company officer.
It determines;
-# of FF’s & equipment needed to control the fire
-Overall life hazard
-Most effective point of attack
-most effective method of venting heat & smoke
What are the most important size up duties?
Locating the fire and determining its severity.
At a truss roof bldg. or structure with a high ceiling where conflicting reports are given by members operating on the roof and members operating inside the bldg., which report about the severity of the fire may be the most accurate?
The FF’s operating on the roof
Post fire analysis is an analysis of the strategy & tactics, and a safety investigation from the point of view of the IC. It should be conducted after a major fire or an ordinary fire where a significant event occurs. As soon as the fire is extinguished, steps should be taken by the IC of the fire to conduct a post fire analysis. If it cannot be conducted by the IC it should be conducted by who?
Another chief officer so it receives the point of view of an Incident commander.
Examples of when to conduct a Post fire analysis are;
- A FF or fire officer is killed
- An explosion, backdraft, or BLEVE occurs
- When a large loss caused by fire occurs
- and when a structural failure occurs with what other thing?
A structural failure occurs where a FF was injured.
Fire spread weaknesses-that allow the spread of flame & smoke and are recurring In each of the standard construction types & the general collapse characteristics of burning standard construction types are:
Give the spread of flame & smoke & collapse hazard of each bldg. type:
Fire resistive bldg.’s
- Central AC duct system
- Concrete bldg. suffer localized ceiling collapse by spalling concrete
- Steel skeleton bldg. suffer secondary steel floor support beams separate from the main girder at the connection
Fire spread weaknesses-that allow the spread of flame & smoke and are recurring In each of the standard construction types & the general collapse characteristics of burning standard construction types are:
Give the spread of flame & smoke & collapse hazard of each bldg. type:
Non combustible bldg.’s
- A combustible roof deck
- suffer early floor collapse
Fire spread weaknesses-that allow the spread of flame & smoke and are recurring In each of the standard construction types & the general collapse characteristics of burning standard construction types are:
Give the spread of flame & smoke & collapse hazard of each bldg. type:
Ordinary construction bldg.’s
- Concealed voids & spaces
- Parapet wall collapse near the roof level or at setbacks
Fire spread weaknesses-that allow the spread of flame & smoke and are recurring In each of the standard construction types & the general collapse characteristics of burning standard construction types are:
Give the spread of flame & smoke & collapse hazard of each bldg. type:
Heavy timber bldg.’s
- Large amounts of structural fire loading, in combination with unprotected window openings, create tremendous radiated heat waves, which spread fires to exposures.
- If fully involved-suffer floor collapse followed by masonry wall collapse.
Fire spread weaknesses-that allow the spread of flame & smoke and are recurring In each of the standard construction types & the general collapse characteristics of burning standard construction types are:
Give the spread of flame & smoke & collapse hazard of each bldg. type:
Wood frame bldg.’s
- Combustible exterior walls with small horizontal separations between bldg.’s allow rapid fire spread between wood frame bldg.’s
- Suffer bearing wall collapse with instantaneous floor collapse
General Knowledge*
The most frequent causes of burning bldg. collapse are:
- Fire destruction
- Explosion
- Backdraft
- BLEVE
- Impact of hose streams or equipment striking the structure
- Water accumulation trapped on upper floors or roofs
- Ice formation from hose streams
There are 3 stages of fire growth: 1st stage-The growth stage 2nd stage-Fully developed stage 3rd stage-Decay stage At what stage(s) is the structural framework of the bldg. affected and most collapses occur?
The 2nd & 3rd stages
The most important strategy and tactical consideration at a fire is what according to DUNN?
Water supply & pressure
