Endometriitis
A uterine infection that typically develops within 2 to 4 days postpartum to as late as six weeks
Mastitis
Inflammation of the mammary gland, a common problem that may occur within the first two days to two weeks postpartum
Post partum, depression
Form of clinical depression, that can affect women, and sometimes men, after childbirth
Postpartum hemorrhage
Potentially life-threatening complication that can occur both after vaginal and cesarean birth
Subinvolution
Refers to incomplete involution of the uterus or failure to return to its normal size and condition after birth
Uterine atony
Failure of the uterus to contract and retract after birth
Drugs used to control postpartum hemorrhage
Oxytocin (pitocin) First line therapy; stimulates the uterus to contract, and control, bleeding from the placental site
Misoprostol (cytotex): Stimulates the uterus to contract to reduce the bleeding; a prostaglandin analog
Pathophysiology of postpartum hemorrhage
The five T
- Tone; uterine atony, distended bladder
- Tissue; retained, placenta, and clots
- Trauma; vaginal, cervical or uterine injury
- Thrombin; coagulopathy pre-existing are required, DIC
