Ch. 21 Pt. 2 Fungus Flashcards
Fungus
Heterotrophic eukaryotes with cell walls that contain chitin
Fungus are _______________.
external decomposers
Fungus decompose by _____________.
Producing powerful enzymes and releasing them through their cell walls that digest food outside their bodies
Fungus can _________________.
live as parasites by absorbing the nutrients from the bodies of their hosts.
Hyphae-
Cells that are long branching filaments
Mycelium-
Tangled mass of branching hyphae below the soil. Remains below and is not visible
fruiting body-
Reproductive structure of a fungus made of hyphae that grows from the Mycelium. (Common mushroom figure)
Lichens-
The photosynthetic organism is a green algae or a cyanobacteria or both
Lichens are _________________________________.
able to survive in harsh environments and usually are the first organisms to invade a barren environment
Mycorrhizae-
Mutualistic relationship between a fungus and a green plant especially at the root.
Describe decomposition in Fungi
By breaking down plants and dead material fungi return nutrients and trace elements that plants remove from the soil. Organic molecules would remain tied up in the bodies of dead organisms unless fungi break them down with enzymes.
examples of phylum ascomycota:
Morels, truffles, Penicillin species, yeasts
examples of phylum zygomycota
Common Molds-Rhizopus (Black bread mold), fruit molds, mycorrhiza on plant roots
