Ch. 2 Operational Procedures Flashcards
ESD
Electrostatic Discharge
What is Electrostatic discharge?
The flow of electrons from one object to another due to the differing amounts of electrical potential in the objects.
What tools can you use to prevent accidental damage due to ESD?
- Antistatic wrist strap
- Antistatic mat
- Antistatic bag
How do antistatic devices work?
The wrist straps and mats contain tiny resistors that resist the flow of electricity. They prevent a static charge from racing through the device.
In what climate is ESD more likely an issue?
In a dry, cool environment
How do you prevent ESD if you do not have a tool to do so?
Touch the power supply, or another metal part, of a computer occasionally while working on it
EMI
Electromagnetic Interference
What is Electromagnetic interference?
Magnetic interference that can damage computer components
What devices are particularly susceptible to EMI?
- Floppy drives (legacy technology)
- Hard drives
- Flash drives
- CRT (tube) monitors (legacy technology)
What types of devices produce EMI interference?
Any device with a magnet. Examples include, but are not limited to the following: • Electrical motors • Telephones • Laptop power bricks • Speakers
RFI
Radio Frequency Interference
What is Radio frequency interference?
The distortion heard on phones and speakers due to interference caused by radio waves
What sorts of devices produce radio waves?
- Cell phones
- Wireless network cards
- Cordless phones
- Baby monitors
- Microwave ovens
