CH 2 - nervous system functioning Flashcards
what is the nervous system?
The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, and a complex network of nerves. This system sends messages back and forth between the brain and the body. The brain is what controls all the body’s functions.
What 2 divisions separate the nervous system?
Central Nervous system (CNS)
Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
What 2 divisions separate the peripheral nervous system?
Autonomic NS
- communicates with internal organs and glands
Somatic NS
- communicates with sense organs and voluntary muscles
What 3 divisions separate the Autonomic nervous system?
Enteric NS
- digestion
Sympathetic
- arousing / preparing the body for action
Parasympathetic
- calming (the body down after action)
What 2 divisions separate the Somatic nervous system?
Sensory
- aka afferent
- sensory input
Motor
- aka efferent
- motor input
what is a conscious response?
a recations to sensory stimulus that involves awareness. it is:
- voluntary
- controlled
- intentional
- goal directed / purposeful
what is an unconscious response?
a reaction that does not involve awareness, it is:
- involuntary
- unintentional
- automatic
- unable to be controlled
what is the main role of the central nervous system?
- to perceive information
- to process information
- to coordinate a response to the information
