Cardiac Output
Cardiac output (CO) is the amount of blood ejected from the heart each minute.
CO = HR x SV
Normal adult cardiac output (CO) is approximately 5 L per minute
Define the following;
Systole, Diastole, Autonomic Nervous System, Endocrine system, Short Axis
EDV is the amount of blood in the ventricle at the end of the resting phase
ESV is the amount of blood remaining in the ventricle after contraction
Stroke Volume
SV is the amount of blood ejected by one ventricle per each contraction
SV = ESV - EDV
On the ECG, ventricular depolarization corresponds to the
QRS complex
QUESTION SET QUESTIONS
ENJOY
Instrument used to measure cardiac volumes…
MRI
Exercise caused cardiac cycle length to…
Decrease
Exercise caused ESV to…
Decrease
Exercise caused SV to…
Increase
What caused the change in SV with exercise?
Increased force of cardiac muscle contraction
What caused the change in CO with exercise?
Increased HR and SV
Why is the change in CO with exercise important?
Increase in CO is necessary to transport needed nutrients and oxygen to tissues and to remove wastes
