Ch. 2 Biology of Behavior Flashcards
the brain and spinal cord
Central Nervous System (CNS)
the sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system (CNS) to the rest of the body
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
the division of the autonomic nervous system that calms the body, conserving its energy
Parasympathetic nervous system
the division of the autonomic nervous system that arouses the body, mobilizing its energy in stressful situations
Sympathetic nervous system
basic units of the nervous system capable of communication and transmitting information
Neurons
space between the sending axon and the receiving dendrite
Synapse
fibers that receive neural messages
Dendrite
end point of the axon
Terminal button
fiber that sends a neural message; each neuron only has one
Axon
the central portion of the cell; plays the role of summation
Cell body
chemical messengers that cross the synaptic gaps between neurons
ex. Dopamine, serotonin, endorphins
Neurotransmitters
neurons that carry incoming information from the sensory receptors to the brain and the spinal cord
Sensory/afferent neurons
neurons within the brain and spinal cord that communicate internally and intervene between the sensory inputs and motor outputs
Interneurons
neurons that carry outgoing information from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles and glands
Motor/efferent neurons
type of neuron communication that makes the receiving neuron MORE likely to send a signal
