Ch 2 - Aircraft Mass Definitions Flashcards
BEM
Basic Empty Mass
Compromises:
- Empty clean aircraft
- Any unusable fuel/ liquids (lubrication and hydraulic fluids)
- Safety equipment
- Supplementary electronic equipment
Should remain constant between weighing unless modified or changed
The Variable Load
Compromises:
- Crew and their baggage
- Catering and other removable passenger service equipment
- Food and beverages
- Potable (drinking) water
- Lavatory chemicals
- Any other special operational equipment
The Traffic Load
Compromises:
- Passengers
- Baggage
- Cargo
- Non-revenue load (load transported to support company)
Fuel
Ramp Fuel (block fuel)- Usable fuel includes taxi fuel
T/O Fuel - End of the runway, start of take off (ramp fuel - taxi fuel)
Landing Fuel (T/O fuel - Landing Fuel = Trip Fuel) - can limit T/O mass
AUM
All Up Mass (Gross/Total mass)
- Total mass of the aircraft and decreases during flight (fuel burn)
Compromises:
- BEM
- The Variable Load
- The Traffic Load
- The Fuel
B,V,T,F

Fuel
Taxi Fuel \+ T/O Fuel - Trip Fuel = Landing Fuel = Block Fuel
T/O Fuel
= Block Fuel - Taxi Fuel (which is usually a given amount)
Traffic Load
= All Up Mass (AUM) - Operating Mass (OM)
Zero Fuel Mass
= Traffic Load + Dry Operating Mass (DOM)
