Allow Missouri to join as a slave state;
Allow Maine to join as a free state;
This allowed the number of free vs slave states to remain equal;
At 36 degree 30 latitude line that with the exception of Missouri – no state north of that line could be a slave state
What were the important components of the Compromise of 1850?
Fugitive Slave Law – passed by congress and said North had to help return runaway slaves to the South;
California added to the Union as a free state;
Utah and New Mexico had the choice to vote on whether to allow slavery;
Stopped slave auctions in Washington, DC
Many abolitionists helped slaves escape to freedrom through this
Underground Railroad
What was a conductor on the Underground Railroad?
a leader that would direct slaves to freedom through “stations” or safe houses
How would slaves identify a station or safe house?
There would be a signal such as a light or a quilt hung outside.
