Ch 17 - Tech Rescue & Vehicle Extrication Flashcards
Pancake collapse
Exterior walls collapse simultaneously causing roofs and floors to collapse on top of each other.
Least likely to contain voids
V-shaped collapse
Outer walls remain intact and floor/roof fails in the middle
Lean-to collapse
One outer wall collapses, side of the floor/roof connected to failed wall collapses, creating a triangular void. Likely victim survival
A-frame collapse
Floor/roof collapses on both sides of load bearing wall, creating a pair of lean-to collapses on either side of load bearing wall. Good chance of victim survival in void spaces
Cantilever collapse
One or more walls collapse, leaving floors attached to and supported by remaining walls. Good chance of survivable voids but high risk of secondary collapse
Physical hazards in collapse
-debris that is sharp/jagged
-exposed wiring and rebar
-broken glass
-unprotected openings
-secondary collapse
Environmental hazards of collapse
-fire
-noise
-darkness
-damaged/leaking utilities
-atmospheric conditions
PFD distance from water
10ft
Cable elevators
Any size building
Counterweights
Equipment room, sometimes at top
Hydraulic elevators
Limited to six stories
Mechanical room on lower level nearby shaft
Escalator rescue
Stop escalator and use hand pressure or crank to move the treads backwards
