What is the DEFINITION OF LABOR?
the onset of REGULAR, RHYTHMIC CTXs which result in EFFACEMENT or PROGRESSIVE THINNING of the CERVIX and DILATION or WIDENING of the CERVIX

What is ATTITUDE?
fetal posturing, degree of flexion of baby
-general flexion
What is LIE?
position: vertical or transverse
-LONGITUDINAL/VERTICAL IS MOST COMMON
What is PRESENTATION?
fetal part closes to cervix (occiput, breech, etc)
-MOST COMMON IS CEPHALIC
Where would you auscultate for FHT on a fetus in BREECH presentation?
auscultate in UPPER R or L quad, ABOVE UMBILICUS
Where would you auscultate on a baby in CEPHALIC/ VERTEX (head) position?
auscultate in LOWER R or L quad, BELOW UMBILICUS
What is POSITION?
relationship of fetal presenting part to moms part (ROA, LOA, etc)
What is FETAL STATION?
where the presenting part of the fetus is in the pelvis
-measured in cm
What is ZERO STATION?
the ischial spine
How large does the cervix dilate?
from 1cm to 10 cm
How much does the MATERNAL CO increase during each ctx?
CO ↑ 51% above baseline
Does the MATERNAL HR increase during ctxs?
yes it increases SLIGHTLY in first and second stage
Does the MATERNAL BP raise during ctxs?
both systolic and diastolic increase during ctxs and return to baseline btwn ctxs
Does the MATERNAL WBC increase or decrease during labor?
increases
