ch. 16 anatomy of the skin Flashcards
what are the 3 layers of the skin
epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous layer
epidermis
layer 1: cellular membrane layer, containing keratin
flat and scale-like cells in the epidermis
squamous epithelium
epithelium
covering of both the internal and external surfaces of the body
basal layer
the deepest layer of the epidermis, that is always growing and multiplying
superficial layer
stratum corneum
how is keratin produced?
the basal layer divides and pushes the younger cells going to the stratum corneum = flatten, shrink, lose their nuclei, and die
melanocytes
contain melanin that is transferred to other epidermal cells and gives the color of the skin
t/f: the # of melanocytes is the same for everyone as well as the amount of melanin
false; melanin count is different within each cell
dermis
layer 2: dense, fibrous, connective tissue layer, containing collagen
elastin
protein that is elastic and helps the skin return to its original position
collagen
fibrous protein material in bone, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments
subcutaneous layer
layer 3: thick, fat-containing tissue
what are the 2 cutaneous layers
epidermis and dermis
adipocytes
