Appreciative Listening
Listening for personal enjoyment
Comprehensive Listening
Listening occurs when understanding a message for a particular reason, to gain knowledge or complete a task
Critical Listening
Listening to making judgements about messages we receive
Critical Thinking
Ability to make reasonable decisions about what to believe or do based on careful evaluation of available evidence and arguments
Discriminative Listening
Listening occurs when we distinguish between verbal and nonverbal messages
Empathetic Listening
Listening to support or help another person, to understand and feel for the other person
Factual Distractions
Internal sources of interference that occur when we concentrate so hard on a speaker’s message we miss the main point
Mental Distractions
Internal sources of interference that occur when our own mind gets in the way of our ability to listen and concentrate
Physical Distractions
External sources of interference that distract us from focusing on the speaker and the message; these could include time of day, temperature of room, and noises both in and out of the room
Semantic Distractions
Internal sources of interference that occur when we have an emotional response to particular words or concepts the speaker is presenting
Process of Listening
Receiving, understanding, remembering, interpreting, evaluating, responding
Barriers to Listening
Physical distractions, mental distractions, factual distractions, semantic distractions
