Ch. 15 Flashcards
Define somatic nervous system
The part of the vertebrate PNS that controls skeletal muscles and provides afferent information from sensory receptors not associated with internal organs
Define autonomic nervous system
The division of the nervous system that innervates and controls autonomic (involuntary) effectors and conveys sensory information from internal organs
Define ganglia
Discrete collection of neuronal cell bodies (segmental components of the CNS in invertebrates; components of the PNS in vertebrates)
Define afferent
Signal conduction from the PNS to the CNS
Define efferent
Signal conduction from the CNS to the PNS
Define gray matter
Region of a vertebrate CNS that contains neuronal cell bodies, dendrites, and synapses as well as axons
Define white matter
Region of a vertebrate CNS that consists largely of tracts of neuronal axons with an abundance of myelin
Define sympathetic
Controls fight/flight
Define parasympathetic
Controls rest/relax
Define enteric
Controls autonomous movements within the gut
Describe the generalized order of a reflex
- Stimulus
- Sensory neurons
- CNS interneurons
- Motor neurons
- Effector/movement
Contrast gray and white matter.
Gray matter consists of neuronal cell bodies (middle of spine), and white matter consists of myelinated axons (ends of dorsal roots toward the PNS)
Nerves that lead from sensory cells to the spinal cord are ______________. Nerves that lead from the spinal cord to the muscle/effector are ________________.
afferent, efferent
Contrast neuron length in the SNS vs ANS.
SNS neurons are longer. ANS neurons have ganglia, whereas SNS neurons do not.
