Intimate partner violence

denying a woman knowledge or access to finances
Rule of thumb
comes from an old English law in which a husband was allowed to hit his wife to discipline her, but was limited to using a rod or stick that was no bigger in diameter than his thumb
Broad definition vs narrow definition of domestic violence
Broad: domestic violence is a structural inequality sand problem, occurs bc of the patriarchy
Narrow: specific and limited problem of a particular part of the population, solved more easily, looked at with quantitative data
Social learning theory and violence
observing domestic violence as a child normalizes it
Intergenerational transmission of violence/trauma
kids repeat behaviors they saw their parents do
Cycle of violence
1: tension building; signs that the man does not react appropriately in certain situations
2: violent act
3: honeymoon, man apologizes for what he did and makes her feel good about herself
Coercive control
can include a mix of abusive behaviors that a man uses to create an atmosphere of intimidation and fear
Parental alienation
when a Childs fears or rejects a parent (typically the father) the Childs fears are a result of “brainwashing” by the mother; in court, they say that children don’t just fear their parents, it can only be explained by the other parents negative influence
Dutton’s personality theory of violence and problems with it
argues that men who have psychological problems perpetrate abuse; but this only applies to a very narrow range of people

intervention strageties that ensure a systematic approach to the problem that incorporates multiple public services as well as participation from diverse community organizations that represent the cultural and religious diversity of its population
