Positive Symptoms
- Bizarre: additions to a person’s behavior
- Delusions: faulty interpretations of reality
- Disorganized thinking/speech: loose associations (derailment), neologisms (made-up words), perseveration (repetition), clang (rhyme)
- inappropriate affect: situationally unsuitable
- Heightened Perceptions/hallucinations: auditory = most common form
Negative Symptoms
~ pathological deficits that are lacking
~ poverty of speech (alogia)
~ restricted affect (avoidance of eye contact, less emotion, expressionless, anhedonia (lack of pleasure & enjoyment)
~ loss of emotion
Catatonia
extreme forms of psychomotor symptoms including stupor, rigidity, posturing, and excitement
Course of Schizo
~ first appears between late teens and mid-30s
~ experience 3 phases
Three phases of schizo onset
- prodromal (beginning of deterioration; mild symptoms)
- Active (apparent symptoms)
- Residual (return to prodromal like levels)
A fuller recovery is more likely in people…
