Ch. 11.1 : Basic Concepts Flashcards
1
Q
Reasons why carbon is special?
A
- it is in group 14 of the periodic table, with four electrons in its outer shell.
- Each carbon atom can form four covalent bonds to other atoms
- carbon atoms can bond to carbon atoms to form long chains
2
Q
What is the definition of compound ?
A
Two or more elements bonded together
3
Q
When are hydrocarbons saturated / unsaturated?
A
Saturated : only single bonds
Unsaturated : multiple carbon to carbon bonds
4
Q
What is a homologous series?
A
A family of organic compounds with similar chemical properties who’s successive members differ by the addition of a - CH2- group and follow a general formula.
The simplest homologous series is the alkanes. They all contain single carbon - to - carbon bonds.
5
Q
What is a functional group?
A
It is the part of the organic molecule that is largely responsible for the molecules chemical properties.
