Ch. 11: Health and Well-being (Stress) Flashcards
Stress
A feeling of strain and pressure (it has a strong subjective component and is difficult to quantify/measure)
Stressors
External stimulus that causes stress
Eustress
stress of positive events
Distress
stress of negative events
Major life stressors
changes or disruptions that strain central areas of people’s lives, such as having your first child
Chronic stress
a set of ongoing challenges often linked to long-term illness, poverty, or caregiving
Daily hassles
small, day-to-day irritations and annoyances, such as driving in heavy traffic, dealing with difficult people, or waiting in line
Fight-or-Flight response
An emergency reaction to acute threats which Prepares the body for combat and struggleor for running away to safety
Tend-and-Befriend response
tendency to protect and care for offspring & form
social alliances rather than fight or flee in response
to threat
* From an evolutionary perspective, females typically bear a greater responsibility for the care of offspring, and responses that protect
their offspring as well as themselves would be maximally adaptive.* Tend-and-befriend response is not necessarily gendered. It makes just as much sense for males to “tend and befriend” in many circumstances.
Coping
Process of dealing with internal or external demands perceived as straining
Problem-directed coping
Reducing or eliminating a stressor
Emotion-focused coping
Changing one’s own emotional reaction
The Roseto Effect
the phenomenon by which a close-knit community experiences a reduced rate of heart disease. The effect is named for Roseto, Pennsylvania.
