Ch 11 DNA Replication and Recombination Flashcards
Semi-conservative replication
A mode of DNA replication in which a double-stranded molecule replicates such a way that the daughter molecules are each composed of one parental and one newly synthesized strand.
Conservative replication
Replication process in which two newly synthesized strands come together and the parental strands reassociate.
Dispersive replication
The parental strands are dispersed into two new double helices following replication. Each strand consists of both old and new DNA.
Origin of replication (ori)
Sites where DNA replication begins along the length of a chromosome
Replication fork
The Y-shaped region of a chromosome at the site of DNA replication
DNA Polymerase I (definition)
An enzyme that participates in the process of DNA replication. Discovered by Arthur Kornberg.
DNA Polymerase I (function)
Catalyzes the addition of nucleotides to the growing complement of the DNA template, using a nucleoside triphosphate as the substrate.
Primer
In nucleic acids, a short length of RNA or single-stranded DNA required for initiating synthesis directed by polymerases.
