Violence
Extreme acts of aggression
Anger
Strong feelings of displeasure in response to a perceived injury
Hostility
A negative, antagonistic attitude toward another person or group.
Proactive aggression
Harm is inflicted it as a means to a desired end. (Instrumental aggression.
Reactive aggression
The means and the end coincide; harm is inflicted for it own sake. (Emotional aggression)
Positive reinforcement
When aggression produces desired outcomes
Negative reinforcement
Aggression prevents or stops undesirable outcomes.
Social Learning Theory
We learn from the examples of others as well as from direct experience with rewards and punishments.
Cycle of violence
The transmission of domestic violence across generations
Frustration-aggression hypothesis
The idea that 1) frustration always elicits the motive to aggress and 2) all aggression is caused by frustration
Displacement
Aggressing against a substitute target because aggressive acts against the source of the frustration are inhibited by fear or lack of access
Catharsis
A reduction of the motive to aggress that is said to result from any imagined, observed, or actual act of aggression.
Weapons effect
The tendency that the likelihood of aggression will increase by the mere presence of weapons
Hostile attribution bias
The tendency to perceive hostile intent in others.
Rumination
Repeatedly thinking about and reliving an anger inducing event.
