Ch 10.1 Morphophonology Flashcards
Phonological allomorphs
allomorphs that look similar and bear the same meaning
Suppletive allomorphs
allomorphs that do not look similar - often looked at as being strong or weak
automatic alternation
An alternation in allomorphy that happens as a result of phonological conditioning
morphophonological alternation
alternation that occurs in the phonology as a result of the added morphemes themselves
phonological conditioning in alternations
conditions under which the alternations occur can be described in purely phonological terms with rules
morphological conditioning in alternations
Morphophonological alternations always have a lexical, often morphological, conditioning component
How is sound change motivated by phonetics?
Phonetic production is made easier by the change in automatic alternations
Phonetic coherence and alternations
Often automatic alternations have to do with natural classes, such as voicedness, which means that they are more likely to be phonetically coherent.
phonetic distance and alternations
automatic alternations tend to differ in only one feature, but morphophonological alternations can differ quite drastically
alternations in loanwords
When you see an alternation in a foreign word, you can know for sure that it is automatic because they apply to them just as much as they do native words
Speech style and alternations
If an alternation can be avoided by speech style (as in formal vs. casual speech) it is probably automatic; morphophological alternations are not optional because of speech style
New segments and alternations
If the process creates new segments that are not found in other environments in the language, it is probably an automatic alternation; morphonological alternations tend to use segments that are used independently in the language
Alternations across word-boundaries
Automatic alternations may occur across word-boundaries but morphophonological ones may not.
