  • Rulers couldn’t protect people, so new, smaller lords offered protection in return for military service
  • would give vassal land to control politically, vassal would have own vassals
  • knights high social status & land given meant they were wealthy
  • feudal contract were unwritten rules between lord and vassal; military service & give advice in court when summoned -for- giving land, defending militarily, and taking his side in conflict

A

The carruca & the 3-field crop rotation.

  • carruca was iron plow that turned heavy soils easily; expensive and required many animals, caused shift toward farming villages because a village would share 1
  • 3-field crop rotation instead of 2-field allowed more land to be used at a time and increased food production
