Contemporary Approaches to student learning
Teachers may use aspects of both approaches.
Constructivist: Learner-centered and emphasizes active, cognitive construction of knowledge and understanding.
Direct Instruction: Teacher-centered and the teacher controls the direction. Emphasis on mastery of academic skills, high expectations, and maximum time spent learning tasks.
Accountability
Public and government concerns led to state-mandated testing. No Child Left Behind is an example of increased state-mandated testing.
Common core and the Every Student Succeeds Act have been used as ways to reduce some of the problems associated with No Child Left Behind.
High School Dropouts
Dropping out leads to deficiencies that limit the economic and social well-being of an individual in adulthood. Progress has been made for reducing African American youth dropouts but Latino and Native are still very high.

Similar to the transition from elementary to middle school. Reduced interaction with the parents.
Classroom Climate and Management
A positive classroom climate is promoted by an authoritative management strategy and effective management of group activities, it improves student learning and achievement.
Managing the classroom to prevent problem behaviors from developing and maximizing student learning.
Parents and Schools
Family management organized routine, and high achievement expectations are positively linked to adolescents’ success in school.
Peers
Middle schools encourage students to interact with a large number of peers daily.
Popular peer status is linked with greater academic success while the opposite is true for rejected peer status.
Bullying is a concern and causes long-term and short-term negative effects.
Friendships are related to school success.
Culture
US schools have the strongest emphasis on athletics.
Teachers must have positive expectations and challenge students of color to achieve.
Culture - Adolescents in Low SES
Adolescents in poverty face barriers that affect their learning.
Lower SES schools have fewer resources and less experienced teachers and encourage rote learning rather than critical thinking skills.
ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity.
Treatment: Medical and behavioral interventions.
Educational Issues Involving Adolescents with Disabilities
Law 94-142 requires all students with disabilities to be given free, appropriate education.
IDEA spells out broad mandates for services to all children and adolescents with disabilities.
Adolescents with disabilities - What does Inclusion mean?
Inclusion means education students with disabilities in the regular classrooms although some educators disagree with this.
